About the author
Alan La Roche MBE, BDS, was responsible for the creation of the Howick Historical Village and was honorary Director from its opening in 1980 until 2007 when he was appointed Howick Historian to research and write another major history of the area. He planned, researched and moved many Fencible buildings and associated buildings, and conserved them leading a team of energetic, devoted volunteers of the Howick and Districts Historical Society.
 He was co-author of The Royal New Zealand Fencibles 1847-1852. He wrote The History of Howick, Pakuranga, Buckland-Eastern beaches, Whitford and Surrounding Districts, So Delightful a Parish - The Revd. Vicesimus Lush at Howick 1850-1864. He leads historical walks of the area and has erected about 120 historical plaques in Manukau City
He is Former chairman of the Regional Committee of New Zealand Historic Places Trust, Chairman of Howick Community Board, deputy chairman of Auckland Conservation Board, Howick Citizen of the Year 1981, Winston Churchill Fellow 1991, awarded MBE in 1992 and Paul Harris Fellow. 
He is active in several conservation organisations and enjoys tramping with his wife and grand children.


His large, handsome and prolifically illustrated local history is an enormous credit to him will be keenly sought by those who live in the area and by libraries everywhere.
