"The world's worst sentence?": - Interesting article from Gordon Dryden

The Economist latest issue features an article headed: "The world's worst sentence?":

The article also includes George Orwell's simple rules for clear writing, which also open The Economist's Style Book.

My own file on tips for clear writing begins with The Economist's 2004 Leader headed "Out with The Long".  It is written entirely with words of one syllable.
