The number of parents who regularly read their children bedtime stories has almost doubled in a generation with many adding celebrity plotlines and real life dramas into classic tales, a new study reveals.

Half of all parents read to their children every night but admit to adapting traditional stories to make them shorter, add some celebrity glamour or introduce a taste of reality based on their own lives, it was claimed.

Pop stars, musicians, actors and Royals such as William and Kate are the most popular additions to classic tales.
A survey of more than 1000 users of parenting advice site Netmums revealed that despite the time-pressures of modern life, parents claim to read to their children more regularly than their own mothers and fathers did.
