From Steam Punk to Perfume - Women in the Window

Saturday 29 October is NZ Bookshop Day.

To celebrate, The Women’s Bookshop in Ponsonby Road presents a bold bunch of creative women ‘doing their thing’ in the shop window throughout the day - textile art, perfume-making, yoga and more.

Steampunk duo Baroness Ditzy von Karbon and Lady Lavinia Laudanum-Swoon will have garments & gadgets & corsets for people to try on between 12noon and 1pm.

Marilyn Jessen will be there, author of Her Space: She Sheds, Back Rooms & Kitchen Tables, the book in which many of these women appear.

Customers can write a ‘love letter’ to the bookshop and WIN $500 of Book Tokens.  Their postcard starting ‘I love my bookshop because . . .’ will be pinned on the shop noticeboard and then sent off to Wellington at the end of the day.

There will also be Spectacular Specials available on the day – authors you’ve been meaning to read, including Ann Patchett’s Bel Canto, Doris Lessing’s Golden Notebook and Michael King’s Penguin History of New Zealand – plus two terrific tales for ten-year-olds: Ruby Redford Look into My Eyes by Lauren Child and Under the Mountain by Maurice Gee.

It will be a fun day, celebrating the joy of reading and the importance of local independent bookshops.
