2017 FINALISTS: PANZ BOOK DESIGN AWARDS

Books to make your shelves beautiful:  The 2017 PANZ Book Design Awards

Those who enjoy the touch, feel and smell of ravishing books will be delighted by the finalists in the 2017 PANZ Book Design Awards, New Zealand’s annual book awards which celebrate the art of the beautiful book.

This year’s PANZ Book Design Awards continues to honour excellence and confirms that book design in New Zealand is in excellent health. The exceptional shortlist presents titles from a wide range of publishers committed to design of the highest standard. The finalists cover the gamut of publishing in New Zealand, from small, boutique publishers through to the large multi-nationals. Lush cookery books, sumptuous coffee table books, elegant educational titles and spirited children’s books all feature in this year’s awards.

Rowan Sommerset, the judging convener for the awards said "The judges this year have had considerable enjoyment recognising the outstanding work done by our industry, it is such a pleasure to spend time together, to pore over and discuss the thought, details and time spent by the talented people that have created such beautiful objects. This year the judges all felt particularly excited and uplifted to see some exceptional work appear in categories that haven’t historically been the show ponies.”

27 finalists are presented over seven categories: best illustrated book; best non-illustrated book; best children’s book; best educational book; best cookbook; best typography; and best cover. The sought-after award for best book is chosen from the category winners. This year we are delighted to announce the Hachette New Zealand People’s Choice Award which will be chosen on the night by those attending the award ceremony in Auckland on 20 July. The Allen & Unwin Young Designer of the Year will also be announced at the awards ceremony.

The judges for the 2017 awards are four industry specialists: convener Rowen Sommerset, Illustrator and Designer of Dreamboat Books; David Coventon, Graphic Designer at Auckland War Memorial Museum; Anna Egan-Reid, 2016 winner of the Allen & Unwin Young Designer of the Year Award and freelance designer and Vincent Heeringa, Executive Director at Anthem agency.

The PANZ Book Design Awards will take place at a ceremony held on Thursday 20 July at 6pm at Fresh Factory, 6/10 Nikau St. Eden Terrace, Auckland 1021.
